Tesla’s Full Self-Driving (FSD) system has been put to the test in a new video released by the company, showcasing how the technology handles complex driving scenarios. Filmed by Tesla employees, the video features two Model Y vehicles navigating a series of tests on a closed course in California.
The showcased FSD version, 12.5.6.3, is an older iteration of the system currently available to Tesla customers. Since then, newer versions like FSD 12.6 for HW3/AI3-equipped vehicles and FSD 13.2.2 for HW4/AI4 vehicles have been released.
Tesla emphasized that all testing was conducted under controlled conditions with professional drivers to ensure safety. The company stated, “Every Full Self-Driving release is rigorously tested, including rare and adversarial scenarios on closed courses.”
The video highlights how the FSD system responds to challenging scenarios, including unexpected cut-ins, dynamic obstacles, and simulated pedestrian crossings. The scenarios featured in the video include a reverse cut-in, peeking, left turn cut-in, parallel cut-in, yield for oncoming + overtake, right-of-way violator, door opening overtake, right turn harsh braking, left turn across path, cut-out to static cone, dynamic debris, U-turn cut-in, high-speed cut-out to stationary vehicle, high-speed harsh braking, high-speed stationary child, and high-speed crossing child.
One of the standout moments in the video was the U-turn cut-in, where FSD successfully spotted another vehicle and stopped in time. Overall, the system’s performance was deemed impressive even for an older version like FSD 12.5.6.3.
