A recent study conducted by the American University’s Kogod School of Business has revealed that Tesla’s current lineup consists of the most American-made cars on the market. The researchers analyzed the percentage of parts sourced from the United States or Canada in each vehicle model sold in the US, and the results were compiled in the school’s Made in America Auto Index, as reported by Kelley Blue Book.
The highlight of the study was the Tesla Model 3 Performance, which topped the 2024 Made in America Auto Index with an impressive domestic content rating of 87.5%. Following closely behind were the Tesla Model Y Long Range and the standard Model Y, both boasting a total domestic content of 85%. The Tesla Cybertruck secured the third spot on the list with a domestic content rating of 82.5%, while the Tesla Model S and Model X rounded out the top five with a domestic content of 80%.
This isn’t the first time Tesla has achieved top rankings in the Made in America Auto Index. In the previous year, the Tesla Model 3 Long Range and Model Y Long Range led the 2023 list with a domestic content rating of 87.5%. The Tesla Model 3 Performance and Model Y followed closely behind with a domestic content rating of 85%.
Despite Tesla’s stellar performance in the study, American University associate professor Frank DuBois pointed out that Tesla vehicles still contain parts sourced from China. While Tesla CEO Elon Musk acknowledged the findings of the Kogod School’s study, stating on social media that “Teslas have the highest amount of American content,” it’s essential to note that there is still room for improvement in terms of increasing domestic sourcing.
As Tesla continues to dominate the Made in America Auto Index, it’s clear that the company is committed to prioritizing American-made components in its vehicles. With a focus on increasing domestic content and supporting local suppliers, Tesla is setting a benchmark for other automakers to follow in the quest for creating truly American-made cars.
