When it comes to Tesla’s Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), there are typically two or three options available depending on your region. These systems may be offered as a one-time purchase or through a subscription model.
Basic Autopilot, the entry-level package, is now included for free on all Tesla vehicles. However, this was not always the case, so if you’re purchasing a used Tesla, it may not come equipped with Basic Autopilot.
Enhanced Autopilot provides additional features beyond the Basic package, but its availability varies by market. While it was previously available for purchase in North America, it is currently unavailable as Tesla shifts focus towards the more affordable FSD option.
Full Self-Driving (FSD) is Tesla’s premium feature, allowing vehicles to navigate to most destinations without driver intervention, though continuous supervision is required.
Below, we will delve into the details of each of these offerings.
Basic Autopilot
Basic Autopilot is Tesla’s standard offering, which now comes standard on all new vehicles at no additional cost. This package includes “Traffic-Aware Cruise Control” and “Autosteer” as its key features.
Additionally, Tesla vehicles come equipped with various safety features like Automatic Emergency Braking, which are included with every vehicle. Some vehicles may require HW3, introduced in 2019.
Traffic-Aware Cruise Control
Traffic-Aware Cruise Control (TACC) is an advanced form of cruise control that automatically adjusts the vehicle’s speed to maintain a safe following distance from vehicles ahead. TACC can be activated with a tap of the right steering stalk and allows for speed adjustments using the scroll wheel on the steering wheel.
Autosteer
Autosteer enhances lane-keeping functionality, working alongside TACC to keep the vehicle within marked lanes. While Autosteer can operate on both highways and surface roads, it does not stop for stop signs or lights and requires full driver supervision at all times.
Park Assist
Tesla’s Park Assist feature provides a 3D visualization of the vehicle’s surroundings while parking, leveraging Tesla Vision technology to create real-time 3D models of the environment. This feature is available on vehicles powered by AMD Ryzen chips.
Enhanced Autopilot (EAP)
Enhanced Autopilot, which was previously available for purchase or as a subscription in certain regions, adds convenience features to Basic Autopilot functionality, enhancing highway driving and parking capabilities.
Features like Auto Lane Change, Navigate on Autopilot, and Autopark are included in the Enhanced Autopilot package, offering advanced driving assistance for Tesla owners.
Summon
Summon and Smart Summon features allow for remote movement of the vehicle using the Tesla app, enabling parking in tight spaces or summoning the vehicle to your location. Smart Summon, limited to vehicles with ultrasonic sensors, is undergoing updates to expand its availability across all Tesla models.
Full Self-Driving (Supervised)
Full Self-Driving (FSD) is Tesla’s top-tier autonomy package, offering advanced capabilities for city street driving in addition to highway driving. FSD allows Tesla vehicles to navigate from point A to point B with minimal driver intervention, though supervision is required.
The FSD package includes features like Green Traffic Light Chime and advanced autonomy capabilities for a seamless driving experience. It is available for purchase or as a monthly subscription in North America.
FSD (Supervised)
FSD V12, the latest version of Full Self-Driving, provides a comprehensive autonomous driving experience, handling various driving scenarios with driver supervision. From stop signs to lane changes, FSD offers a smooth and efficient driving experience for Tesla owners.
