Tesla’s Giga Texas has reached a significant production milestone this week, with 400,000 Model Y vehicles built since the factory opened nearly three years ago. To celebrate this achievement, Tesla organized a striking display of red Model Ys on the rooftop parking garage, as captured in drone footage by aerial observer Joe Tegtmeyer.
In his latest video, Tegtmeyer showcased the autonomous capabilities of the Model Ys, as they navigate themselves from the production line to sorting lanes on the east side of the facility—a journey spanning nearly two miles with no human intervention. The route takes them under a bridge and around the south side of the plant, demonstrating Tesla’s advanced self-driving technology.
Additionally, Cybertrucks were also observed in action at the site. Some followed a similar path to the Model Ys, while others exited the “Cybertunnel.” Tegtmeyer pointed out that some Cybertrucks appeared to be self-driving, while others had human drivers, possibly indicating a distinction between new production units and those in temporary storage.
Construction progress is evident at the Megapack installation area #2, with approximately two-thirds of the Megapacks already in place on steel beams. Wiring work is set to commence soon to connect them to transformers. Simultaneously, groundwork near the electrical switchyard is ongoing, as crews prepare the area for expansion by raising the land and clearing out remnants of old mining pits. A new drainage pipe is being extended to a future water detention pond, with dirt being transported daily from the north field using center dump trucks.
An official Tesla video highlighting the Megapack installation progress may be released soon, as Tegtmeyer spotted a Tesla drone team capturing footage of the work. The continuous advancements and developments at Giga Texas demonstrate Tesla’s commitment to innovation and efficiency in electric vehicle production.
