As a Tesla owner living in a rented townhouse community, the challenge of home charging can be a significant obstacle. When I purchased my Tesla Model Y Premium All-Wheel-Drive, I knew that relying solely on Superchargers was not a sustainable solution. After months of trying to work with my leasing office to bring EV charging to the neighborhood, I decided to take matters into my own hands.
My assigned parking spot was not ideal for charging as it was staggered, requiring me to find a solution that would allow for overnight charging. I explored several options, including using the Mobile Connector and parking in my neighbor’s spot, buying an extension cord, or investing in an NACS to NACS extension cord. Ultimately, I opted for the latter as it provided the necessary length and kept the Mobile Connector off the ground.
Implementing this solution was straightforward – plug the Mobile Connector into the house, connect the NACS extension, and plug it into the car. However, I had to be mindful of potential theft and invested in a cable cover to protect the cords. While the charging process was slow, providing 3-5 miles of range per hour, it was worth it to keep my car charged and ready for use.
Moving forward, I plan to monitor any troubleshooting, impact on my electric bill, and potential issues with neighbors or the leasing office. If you’re facing similar challenges with at-home charging or have questions about my setup, feel free to reach out to me at joey@teslarati.com.
Overall, finding a solution for home charging in a rental community may require some creativity and perseverance. By exploring different options and investing in the right equipment, it is possible to overcome the challenges and enjoy the benefits of owning an electric vehicle.
