Starlink, the high-speed satellite internet provider, has recently secured a major deal in South Korea’s aviation industry. Korean Air, along with other carriers under the Hanjin Group such as Asiana Airlines, Jin Air, Air Busan, and Air Seoul, have all committed to implementing Starlink’s internet service across their fleets in the coming years.
This partnership marks a significant milestone for Starlink, as it is the first time a Korean airline has opted to utilize their services for in-flight connectivity. The rollout is set to commence later this year with preparation and testing, with full implementation expected by the end of 2027. Korean Air and Asiana Airlines will initially focus on equipping their long-haul aircraft, while Jin Air, Air Busan, and Air Seoul will determine their installation order internally.
The decision to integrate Starlink’s high-speed internet service was driven by the airlines’ recognition of the importance of connectivity in enhancing the overall travel experience for passengers. By offering fast and seamless internet, Korean Air and the Hanjin Group aim to elevate their services and infrastructure to provide a superior passenger journey.
Chad Gibbs, Vice President of Starlink Business Operations at SpaceX, expressed excitement about the collaboration, stating that passengers onboard these airlines will have access to industry-leading in-flight Wi-Fi that enables productivity, streaming, and gaming similar to on-ground experiences. This move aligns with Starlink’s recent momentum in the aviation sector, with several major airlines worldwide opting for their services to provide enhanced connectivity for passengers.
The inclusion of South Korea’s largest airlines in Starlink’s clientele signifies a global trend towards faster and lower-latency in-flight connectivity. As more airlines continue to sign up for Starlink’s services, the company’s presence in the aviation industry is poised to expand rapidly in the coming years.
