Starbase, Texas, the new city that is home to SpaceX’s expansive launch site, has been making significant progress since its incorporation last month. In a recent letter dated June 23, 2025, the Starbase City Commissioners, many of whom are SpaceX personnel, outlined the city’s achievements and ambitious goals.
Since its incorporation, Starbase has quickly adopted 20 city ordinances, proposed an operating budget, launched a municipal website, and approved over 100 residential and commercial building permits. This rapid pace of development is impressive for any new municipality, especially one so closely tied to the aerospace industry. Most of the land within Starbase is owned by SpaceX, with the majority of the city’s residents being employees of the company.
Despite its progress, Starbase has faced challenges. A recent incident on June 18 saw a Starship prototype explode during a static fire test for its 10th orbital flight, raising safety concerns. However, SpaceX has confirmed that all personnel are safe, and investigations are underway to determine the cause of the incident.
Looking ahead, the city commission is focused on developing a comprehensive zoning ordinance to ensure a balanced mix of industrial, commercial, and residential areas. This is essential for a city where rocket launches and everyday life intersect. Additionally, Starbase has designated May 29 as “Starbase Day” and approved an official logo to boost morale and create a sense of identity.
With plans to become fully operational within the first year, Starbase is poised to be one of the most unique and ambitious municipal experiments in modern U.S. history. The city’s progress and forward-looking approach demonstrate its commitment to innovation and growth in the aerospace industry.
