Tesla China Accelerates New Model Y Production
Tesla China is making significant strides in ramping up production of the new Model Y, signaling a promising start for the electric vehicle manufacturer in 2025. The transition to the new Model Y has been a focal point for Tesla China, with a noticeable shift in vehicle registrations and sales strategies.
Initially, new vehicle registrations for the Model Y were lower in the first two months of 2025 as Gigafactory Shanghai underwent preparations for the production of the new Model Y. During this period, Tesla China focused on clearing out existing inventory of the Model Y classic units to make way for the new model.
However, late February marked the beginning of deliveries for the new Model Y across China, leading to a surge in registrations. Recent estimates indicate a notable increase in registrations, with reports suggesting that Tesla China recorded 8,700 registrations in the week ending March 9, up from 6,700 the previous week.
Strong Customer Interest in the New Model Y
The new Model Y has garnered strong interest among Chinese car buyers, with reports indicating a high demand for the revamped all-electric crossover. According to sources, Tesla staff disclosed receiving approximately 200,000 orders for the new Model Y since its domestic announcement in January.
If these estimates hold true, the new Model Y is poised to achieve remarkable sales figures in China’s domestic market, particularly in March and the subsequent quarters.
2025 Sales Performance for Tesla China
Recent data from the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA) revealed a decline in Tesla China’s wholesale vehicle sales for February 2025. With 30,688 units sold wholesale, there was a 51.47% decrease from January’s figures and a 49.16% drop compared to February 2024. The combined sales for January-February 2025 currently stand at 93,926 units wholesale, as reported by CNEV Post.
