SpaceX’s Starbase facility in Boca Chica, Texas, is undergoing a remarkable transformation, as depicted in a recent nighttime photograph shared by Elon Musk. The image showcases two fully erected Starship launch towers that dominate the coastal skyline, signaling a shift towards high-cadence launch operations.
The newly completed Pad B features its towering OLIT-3, standing at an impressive 474 feet tall. This launch tower incorporates an integrated water-cooled flame trench to minimize damage and reduce turnaround time between launches. The dual-tower silhouette against the night sky symbolizes the evolution of the facility from an experimental testing site to a bustling launch complex.
Meanwhile, Pad 2 is nearing hardware completion, boasting upgraded chopstick arms, a new chilldown vent system, and protective doors on all 20 hold-down arms. These enhancements are designed to shield the infrastructure from the intense exhaust of up to 33 Raptor 3 engines, further solidifying Starbase’s readiness for upcoming missions.
SpaceX has also received approval to expand the Starbase launch site, nearly doubling its footprint. Groundwork is already underway to add LNG liquefaction plants, expanded propellant storage, and additional ground support infrastructure, enhancing the site’s capabilities for future endeavors.
In a significant civic development, Starbase was officially recognized as a Texas city in May 2025 following a community vote. SpaceX employees were elected as mayor and commissioners of the newly incorporated municipality, streamlining launch approvals and granting the company direct control over local infrastructure decisions.
Furthermore, the FAA has greenlit an increase in launches from Starbase, from five to twenty-five per year. This approval paves the way for the frequency of flights necessary to support Starship’s missions, including lunar cargo and crew transport, Department of Defense operations, Starlink satellite deployment, and the eventual establishment of a human presence on Mars.
Viewed from above in the darkness, Starbase now resembles a bustling spaceport, teeming with activity and poised to make history in the realm of space exploration. The facility’s rapid evolution underscores SpaceX’s commitment to pushing the boundaries of space travel and realizing Elon Musk’s vision of a multi-planetary future.
