Smart has unveiled its latest electric vehicle, the Smart #5, which is the largest model in its lineup. This mid-size crossover comes with a host of impressive features, including two huge screens and a remarkable charging rate.
The Smart #5, a product of the joint venture between Mercedes-Benz and Geely, marks a significant departure from the brand’s iconic tiny ForTwo city hatchback. The base model, known as the Smart #5 Pro, is equipped with a rear-mounted electric motor powered by a 76-kilowatt-hour lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery. This setup allows the vehicle to charge at up to 150 kilowatts from a DC fast charger, enabling a quick 10% to 80% state of charge in less than 30 minutes. The entry-level version offers a WLTP-rated range of 289 miles and accelerates from 0 to 62 mph in 6.9 seconds with a 335-horsepower electric motor.
Moving up the lineup, the Smart #5 Pro+ features a larger 100 kWh lithium nickel manganese cobalt oxide (NMC) battery that can accept up to 400 kW from a DC fast charger. This results in a range of 366 miles on a full charge with a single rear motor producing 358 hp. Opting for the dual-motor all-wheel-drive configuration increases power to 579 hp but reduces the range to 335 miles, with acceleration from 0 to 62 mph in just 4.9 seconds.
One of the standout features of the Smart #5 is its vehicle-to-load functionality, allowing the export of power from the main battery to a 230V outlet. The interior of the vehicle is equally impressive, with three screens upfront, including a 10.25-inch gauge cluster display and two 13-inch OLED screens. The Smart #5 also boasts a 25.6-inch Augmented Reality heads-up display and AI-supported voice control for a seamless user experience.
Powered by an AMD V2000 chipset running Smart OS 2.0, the #5 offers optimized EV routing and a video center with integrated video streaming services. Additional features include a 20-speaker Sennheiser Signature Sound system, advanced safety equipment like Adaptive Cruise Control, and a Summit Edition trim with off-road enhancements such as an electric trailer hitch and roof platform.
While the Smart #5 is not slated for release in the United States, European pricing for the Pro models starts at around $49,620, with the Summit Edition priced at $61,500. With its impressive technology, performance, and design, the Smart #5 sets a new standard for electric crossovers in the market.
