Tesla’s Hands-Free Frunk and Trunk – Features & How to Set Them Up
Opening your trunk hands-free can be a game-changer, especially when your hands are full in a crowded parking lot.
Tesla now offers a hands-free option for opening the trunk or frunk of your vehicle without any foot waving required.
Understanding Hands-Free Frunk and Trunk
Tesla has introduced a hands-free feature that utilizes your phone’s position relative to the vehicle. By simply standing still behind your Tesla, the trunk will magically open for you.
This feature is available on all Tesla models currently in production, including the Model Y, Cybertruck, and other recent models.
With a compatible device and supported vehicle, you can now enjoy the convenience of opening your Tesla’s trunk hands-free.
How It Operates
Tesla’s hands-free functionality relies on ultrawide-band (UWB) technology in the vehicle and on your phone. Leading smartphone manufacturers like Apple and Samsung have been incorporating UWB in their devices for several years, making it accessible to a wide range of users.
UWB allows for precise detection of the phone’s location in relation to the vehicle, enhancing not only the hands-free trunk feature but also Tesla’s phone key functionality.
To activate the hands-free feature, simply stand within 2.5 to 3 feet from the front or rear of your Tesla. You will hear a couple of chimes, indicating that the frunk or trunk will open if you remain still.
The chimes serve as a warning to prevent accidental openings and enhance user experience.

Supported Tesla Models
Only Tesla vehicles equipped with the necessary UWB hardware support the hands-free feature. The list of supported models includes:
-
2021 Model S and newer
-
2021 Model X and newer
-
2024 Model 3 (Highland) and newer
-
2026 Model Y (Juniper) and newer
-
All Cybertrucks
Compatible Phones
Your phone must also support UWB technology to utilize the hands-free feature. Fortunately, most flagship smartphones from leading manufacturers already incorporate UWB.
Apple: UWB is available on all Apple devices since the iPhone 11, with the exception of the iPhone SE (2nd and 3rd generation). The iPhone 16e also supports UWB.
Android: Many Android phones, especially flagship devices, have UWB capabilities. Popular models like the Google Pixel 6, Samsung Fold 2, and Samsung S21+ are UWB-compatible.
Hands-Free Frunk Support
Although not all supported models offer hands-free frunk and trunk features, the hands-free frunk is available on the Model S, Model X, and Cybertruck. While the Model S and Model X unlock the frunk for you, manual lifting is still required. The Cybertruck, on the other hand, automatically opens the frunk, similar to the trunk on other Tesla models.
Hands-Free Trunk Support
Most supported Tesla vehicles can utilize the hands-free trunk feature, except for the Cybertruck, which lacks a powered trunk.
Enabling Hands-Free Trunk / Frunk
To activate the hands-free trunk feature on your Tesla, navigate to the Controls section by tapping the vehicle icon in the bottom left corner. From there, access the Locks section to enable the hands-free frunk or trunk and set preferences for home exclusion.
Preventing Accidental Openings – Exclude Home
To avoid accidental trunk or frunk openings, Tesla offers an option to disable the hands-free feature while your vehicle is parked at home. This setting can be found in the Controls > Locks > Hands-Free > Exclude Home section.
If you own a compatible Tesla model, give the hands-free trunk feature a try and experience the convenience firsthand.
