Many Americans dream of owning an RV, but renting from companies like Cruise America is also a popular choice. A Silicon Valley startup is now offering an electric alternative to traditional RV rentals.
RollAway made its debut in 2023 by announcing plans to rent out a fleet of electric RVs based on General Motors BrightDrop vans. Online reservations are now open, with bookings already filling up through fall 2025, as reported by Electrek.

Reservation holders will have access to an electric RV with an estimated range of 270 miles. The vehicle features a unique roll-open rear door that doubles as a large picture window. RollAway also plans to offer hotel-like amenities such as a virtual concierge, breakfast packages, and on-demand toiletries and bedding.
While RollAway is not the first to convert GM’s BrightDrop vans into RVs, it stands out with its luxurious offerings. Another company, Grounded, introduced a less extravagant BrightDrop RV in 2023.

Mercedes-Benz vans have been popular choices for RV conversions, and the automaker is set to unveil its next-generation electric vans in 2026 to continue the trend.
While fully-electric motorhomes are still a bit down the road due to charging infrastructure limitations, plug-in hybrid RVs like the one showcased by Airstream owner Thor Industries offer a viable alternative. These hybrids address the charging challenge while providing a glimpse into the future of electric RVs.
