Rivian, the California-based startup known for its electric SUVs and pickup trucks, also made a significant impact in the commercial vehicle sector last year. The company’s Electric Delivery Van (EDV), later rebranded as the Commercial Van (RCV), emerged as the top-selling electric van in the United States in 2024. Rivian managed to outsell established automakers like Ford and Mercedes-Benz, showcasing the growing demand for electric commercial vehicles.
According to data from research firm Cox Automotive, Rivian sold a total of 13,423 electric vans in 2024, marking a substantial 66% increase from the previous year when they sold 8,091 units. This impressive performance not only solidified Rivian’s position as a key player in the electric vehicle market but also highlighted the shift towards sustainable transportation solutions.
In comparison, Ford’s E-Transit, a longstanding player in the electric van segment, sold 12,610 units in 2024, reflecting a commendable 64% increase from the previous year. Despite Ford’s strong performance, Rivian managed to surpass them in sales, indicating the growing popularity of Rivian’s electric vans among consumers and businesses.
General Motors also made waves in the electric van market with its Chevrolet BrightDrop van, securing the third spot on the list of best-selling electric vans in the U.S. GM sold 1,529 units of the BrightDrop van in 2024, showcasing the company’s commitment to electrification and sustainable mobility.
On the other hand, Mercedes-Benz’s eSprinter, assembled in Charleston, South Carolina, saw limited success in the U.S. market, with only 191 units sold in 2024. Despite its lower sales figures, the eSprinter represents Mercedes-Benz’s foray into the electric commercial vehicle segment and highlights the increasing competition in the market.
Rivian’s success in the electric van segment can be attributed to strategic partnerships and customer agreements. The company’s largest customer, likely Amazon, had an exclusivity agreement with Rivian for the delivery of 100,000 battery-powered vans by 2030. While the exclusivity agreement has ended, Rivian continues to supply electric vans to a diverse range of customers, including AT&T.
Overall, Rivian’s achievement in becoming the top-selling electric van manufacturer in the U.S. last year underscores the company’s commitment to sustainable transportation and innovation in the commercial vehicle sector. As the demand for electric vehicles continues to grow, Rivian is well-positioned to lead the way in shaping the future of clean and efficient transportation solutions.
