Rivian, the electric vehicle manufacturer, is set to receive support for Apple Car Key very soon. This support for the virtual key has been activated on Cupertino’s end just ahead of Apple’s highly anticipated launch event in September, where the iPhone 17 is expected to be unveiled. Since its announcement in 2020, a total of 33 automakers worldwide have pledged their support for Apple’s Car Key feature.
For many individuals, the cell phone is an essential part of their daily life, serving as a social connection, a camera, and even a digital wallet. And soon, it will also serve as a car key. Apple first introduced Car Key in 2020, but manufacturers have been slow to adopt the feature. However, excitement among iPhone owners has been building as they look forward to the day when the feature will finally be available for their vehicles. A recent report from MacRumors has revealed that Rivian’s support for Apple Car Key will be rolled out very soon.
The upcoming support for Rivian’s R1 vehicles was discovered after a configuration file containing information about the feature’s activation in Apple Wallet was spotted. This app on the iPhone securely stores sensitive information like credit card details and digital driver’s licenses behind Apple’s Secure Enclave cryptoprocessor. According to MacRumors, Rivian has confirmed that the feature has been activated on Apple’s end, although the automaker has yet to officially launch the feature on its side. Rivian stated that the feature is “coming soon.”
Apple’s Car Key feature allows iPhone and Apple Watch owners to use their devices’ NFC radio as a digital key for supported vehicles. It functions similarly to a key fob, enabling users to lock, unlock, start, or perform other actions with the vehicle when in close proximity. The feature also supports Apple’s Express Mode, allowing the device to act as a key without needing to be unlocked. Currently, select models from Audi, BMW, Genesis, Hyundai, Kia, Lotus, Mini, Mercedes, Polestar, Ram, and Volvo support Car Key functionality. Additionally, support for Acura, Cadillac, Chevrolet, GMC, Lucid, Porsche, Smart vehicles, and Rivian is on the way.
While there is no specific launch date set for Rivian’s implementation of the feature, the automaker has confirmed that it will be coming soon. The feature will initially be compatible with Gen 2 R1 vehicles, leaving early Gen 1 owners without access. However, early models already support Phone as a Key using the Rivian app. It is hoped that the feature will also extend to the upcoming Rivian R2.
In conclusion, Rivian’s imminent support for Apple Car Key is a significant development for iPhone users and electric vehicle enthusiasts alike. With the integration of this feature, Rivian owners will enjoy the convenience and security of using their iPhone as a digital key for their vehicles. This advancement underscores Rivian’s commitment to innovation and technology in the electric vehicle industry.
