Rivian has taken a significant step in enhancing its Rivian Adventure Network (RAN) by incorporating Tesla’s North American Charging Standard (NACS) plugs. This upgrade eliminates the need for adapters when Tesla drivers charge at Rivian stations, offering a more convenient and seamless experience for electric vehicle (EV) owners.
The implementation of NACS plugs began at Rivian’s Joshua Tree Charging Outpost in California last week. This location now features both NACS and CCS1 connectors, with four CCS cabinets being replaced with NACS plugs. As a result, there are now eight CCS and four NACS chargers available at this site.
Rivian plans to expand this dual-connector setup across its charging network to facilitate the transition to the Tesla-developed standard within the EV industry. The Hamptons Charging Outpost in New York is next in line to receive NACS support, with its opening scheduled for August 7. Additionally, Yosemite’s popular location is set to follow suit later this summer. Rivian aims to equip its most frequented stations with both plug types by the end of 2025.
Newer Rivian vehicles, such as the upcoming 2026 R1T and R1S, come equipped with native NACS ports. However, earlier models will still require adapters when using NACS-only stations. To assist drivers, Rivian’s mobile app and in-vehicle interface provide real-time information on charger availability, plug type, and adapter requirements.
The shift towards NACS is part of a broader industry trend, with nearly every major automaker committing to the standard following its formal adoption by the SAE. NACS plugs offer advantages such as being smaller, lighter, and capable of delivering up to 300 kW of charging power. This standard is also gaining traction globally, as seen with South Korea’s Watter rolling out NACS connectors at charging stations nationwide.
In parallel, Tesla continues to expand its Supercharger network to accommodate more third-party EVs. Recently, Honda’s Prologue and Acura’s ZDX were added to the list of compatible vehicles that can charge at Tesla Superchargers.
Rivian’s decision to incorporate NACS plugs into its charging network not only benefits Tesla drivers but also enhances the overall charging experience for EV owners on the road, providing more seamless and adapter-free charging options.
