SpaceX’s Starlink internet service continues to impress with its recent speed improvements. According to Ookla Speedtest data, the median download speeds in the U.S. have more than doubled from 53.95 Mbps in Q3 2022 to 104.71 Mbps in Q1 2025. Upload speeds have also seen a significant increase, reaching 14.84 Mbps, with latency dropping to 45 ms, providing a much smoother user experience.
The key driver behind these speed enhancements is SpaceX’s deployment of over 6,700 satellites in low-Earth orbit (LEO) and its optimization of internet traffic routing. By increasing the number of local connection points, data no longer needs to travel long distances, resulting in faster speeds for users.
While only 17.4% of U.S. Starlink customers currently meet the FCC’s “true broadband” benchmark of 100 Mbps down and 20 Mbps up, Starlink still outperforms other satellite internet options like HughesNet. The main reason for not meeting the benchmark in most areas is the upload speed requirement, but with average download speeds exceeding 100 Mbps, Starlink remains a viable broadband option. State-wise, users in Maine are enjoying speeds of 136.93 Mbps, while Alaska lags behind.
To attract more users, Starlink is offering free equipment (worth approximately $350) in select states with excess capacity, requiring a one-year contract. Monthly plans range from $80 to $120, depending on the desired speed.
In recent developments, SpaceX launched the more durable Starlink Performance Kit, designed to provide high-speed connectivity in challenging environments. Additionally, the company has completed the deployment of its first-generation Starlink Direct to Cell constellation, offering satellite connectivity to mobile phones worldwide.
With its improved performance, expanding satellite network, and increasing government support, Starlink is emerging as a reliable option for rural Americans and potentially urban residents as well. If you’ve been struggling with slow internet speeds, now might be the perfect time to consider switching to Starlink for a faster and more reliable connection.
