Electric vehicle sales are on the rise, particularly in the United States and China. However, some automakers are facing challenges in retrofitting gas engines into EVs not originally designed for it. This process requires significant investment and finesse, with no guarantee that hybrid models will outperform pure EVs in the market.
In response to this dilemma, Horse Powertrain, a company jointly owned by Renault Group, Geely, and Aramco, has introduced a groundbreaking solution known as the Future Hybrid Concept. This innovative system offers a drop-in solution for manufacturers looking to convert EVs into hybrids seamlessly.
The Future Hybrid Concept consists of an all-in-one power unit comprising a combustion engine, an electric motor, and a transmission. Designed to replace the front drive unit of an EV, this system can accommodate various fuel types, including gasoline, ethanol flex fuels, pure methanol, and modern synthetic fuels.
One of the key advantages of the Horse Powertrain solution is its cost-effectiveness. By allowing EVs and hybrids to be assembled on the same production line, the complexity and costs associated with manufacturing are significantly reduced. The power unit easily integrates with the vehicle’s existing electrical architecture, requiring minimal modifications. Additionally, the system includes essential components such as a gas tank, exhaust system, and an 800-volt charging booster.
The integrated transmission in the power unit offers versatility, capable of powering the front wheels independently or working in conjunction with the electrically-powered rear axle for all-wheel drive. Positioned in an East-West orientation, the power unit includes power electronics systems like a controller, inverter, DC to DC converter, and on-board charger.
Matias Giannini, CEO of Horse Powertrain, emphasized the company’s commitment to addressing the challenges faced by automotive OEMs. He highlighted the shift towards a technology-neutral world, where different markets and applications pursue sustainable mobility in their unique ways. The Future Hybrid Concept enables OEMs to offer powertrain diversity without disrupting the production process or incurring excessive resource expenditure.
Horse Powertrain’s drop-in hybrid system is set to be integrated into series production vehicles starting in 2028. This innovative solution provides a pathway for automakers to transform their existing EVs into hybrids, offering a more sustainable and versatile mobility solution for the future.
