The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) detachment in Burnaby, British Columbia, is embracing the future of law enforcement with the introduction of a fully electric 2024 Chevrolet Blazer EV patrol vehicle. This high-performance SUV is part of a national pilot project aimed at testing the feasibility of incorporating electric vehicles into police fleets across Canada.
The Burnaby Traffic Services division received the Chevrolet Blazer EV in February and wasted no time putting it to the test in real-world patrol situations. From high-speed responses to the demanding electrical requirements of police equipment, officers are providing valuable feedback on the performance of this electric cruiser.
Chief Superintendent Bill Parmar, Officer in Charge of the Burnaby RCMP, expressed his support for the pilot project, emphasizing the importance of transitioning towards zero-emission vehicles. This initiative aligns with the City of Burnaby’s energy strategy, which aims to adopt greener technologies in its municipal fleet.
The RCMP has been proactive in exploring electric vehicle options to meet federal net-zero targets. In addition to the Chevrolet Blazer EV, the Mounties have tested other electric platforms, such as the Tesla Model Y, Ford Mustang Mach-E, and Ford F-150 Lightning truck. The Chevrolet Blazer EV used in Burnaby is a “Police Pursuit Vehicle” (PPV) model, specifically designed by GM for law enforcement use, with heavy-duty suspension and specialized electrical centers.
While British Columbia’s mild climate provides an ideal testing ground for electric vehicles, the RCMP acknowledges that different regions of Canada may present unique challenges. Data gathered from the Burnaby pilot will inform decisions on whether electric patrol vehicles are suitable for rural and northern detachments, where charging infrastructure may be limited, and winter conditions are harsh.
As the RCMP continues to explore the potential of electric vehicles in law enforcement, the Burnaby pilot project serves as a crucial step towards building a more sustainable and environmentally friendly national fleet. Stay tuned for updates on the RCMP’s electrification efforts and the future of policing in Canada.
