Tesla has recently filed a patent for an inflatable “range extender” designed to sit in the bed of the Cybertruck. The purpose of this inflatable device is to improve aerodynamics when towing, a feature that is especially beneficial for electric vehicles facing challenges with limited range while pulling heavy loads.
The patent showcases a rather unconventional solution to the problem of reduced range when towing. The inflatable aerodynamic deflector, classified as a “rear spoiler” by the U.S. Patent Office, is made from drop-stitch fabric, similar to materials used in paddle boards or life jackets. When not in use, the deflector remains deflated in the bed of the truck, but can be easily inflated to create a wedge-shaped profile that guides air smoothly around the back of the Cybertruck, reducing drag and improving efficiency while towing.
Towing has long been known to significantly decrease the range of electric vehicles, as the added weight and aerodynamic drag of a trailer can cut the total distance a vehicle can travel in half. Tesla’s inflatable range extender aims to mitigate this issue by smoothing airflow and minimizing the energy penalty associated with towing heavy loads.
While the concept may seem outlandish, it is not entirely unprecedented. Long-haul truckers have utilized similar aerodynamic modifications such as bolt-on fairings and side skirts to enhance fuel efficiency. Tesla’s inflatable deflector offers a lightweight and easily stowable solution to improving aerodynamics, without the risk of additional panels detaching while driving.
It’s important to note that the inflatable range extender is still in the patent stage, and there is no guarantee that Tesla will proceed with its production. However, if the concept does come to fruition, it is likely to attract attention for its unique design and functionality. While it may appear unconventional and even ridiculous at first glance, the inflatable range extender could prove to be a practical solution for enhancing the range and efficiency of the Cybertruck while towing heavy loads.
