Porsche has once again made headlines by setting a new ice drifting record for electric vehicles with the Taycan. This achievement marks the fourth Guinness World Record for the iconic German automaker. The record was set at Porsche’s Arctic Center in Lavi, Finland, where Porsche Experience instructor Jens Richter took the wheel of a Taycan GTS equipped with studded tires.
During the record-breaking run, Richter drifted the Taycan GTS for an impressive 46 minutes, completing 132 laps and covering a total distance of 10.875 miles (17.503 kilometers). The initial attempt had to be aborted after 6.8 miles (11 kilometers) due to the deteriorating ice track, but Porsche made adjustments for the second try. Switching to tires with shorter spikes and taking advantage of dropping ice temperatures, Richter successfully clinched the record.
Richter, who relied solely on throttle and steering inputs to control the drifting Taycan, praised the all-wheel-drive electric sports car for its exceptional performance on the ice. He emphasized the Taycan GTS’s excellent chassis and balanced performance, highlighting its ability to handle extreme conditions with precision.
The record-setting track featured a circle with a diameter of 193 feet (59 meters), and the Taycan GTS was fitted with Michelin tires sporting one-millimeter spikes for optimal grip. Porsche used a professional GPS measuring device to record data such as distance, acceleration, braking, and G-forces throughout the record attempt.
This new achievement surpasses the previous ice drifting record set by Wang Zhilong in China in 2023 with a Mercedes-Benz EV that drifted 9.202 miles. The Taycan GTS now adds another accolade to its growing list of records, including drifting 210 laps in 55 minutes in 2020 and becoming the fastest car to drive in an enclosed building in 2021.
With a powerful dual-motor all-wheel-drive powertrain delivering 690 horsepower, the Porsche Taycan GTS continues to showcase its prowess in the electric vehicle segment. This latest feat further solidifies the Taycan’s reputation as a high-performance EV with exceptional driving capabilities.
As Porsche continues to push the boundaries of electric vehicle technology, the Taycan remains a symbol of innovation and excellence in the automotive industry. Stay tuned for more thrilling achievements from Porsche and their line of electrifying vehicles.
