California Hits Milestone with Over Two Million Electric Vehicles Sold
California has achieved a significant milestone in the electric vehicle market, with over two million plug-in electric vehicles sold in the state since 2011. This achievement marks a major step towards reducing emissions and transitioning to cleaner transportation options.
In total, 2,113,135 all-electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles have been sold in California since 2011, accounting for 38.8% of all electrified cars sold in the United States over the past 23 years. The state has seen a clear upward trend in the adoption of zero- and low-emission vehicles, with 343,213 EV and PHEV sales recorded in the first nine months of this year alone.
During the third quarter, California witnessed 115,897 EVs and PHEVs sold, contributing to 30.3% of the country’s electric vehicle market. The state’s market share for electrified vehicles reached 26.4% in Q3, signaling a strong demand for clean transportation options among consumers.
In terms of best-selling electric vehicles in California in Q3, the Tesla Model Y emerged as the top choice, followed by the Tesla Model 3 and Hyundai Ioniq 5. Surprisingly, the Toyota Rav4 Prime plug-in hybrid outsold popular models like the Ford Mustang Mach-E and Tesla Model X. Other notable entries in the top 10 list included the Volkswagen ID.4, BMW i4, Tesla Cybertruck, and Jeep Wrangler 4xe plug-in hybrid.
To support the growing number of electric vehicles on its roads, California has installed over 150,000 public and shared private EV chargers. The state boasts 137,648 Level 2 chargers and 14,708 Level 3 DC fast chargers as of August 2024, along with more than 500,000 private home chargers installed across the state.
California’s achievement of surpassing two million electric vehicle sales underscores the state’s commitment to sustainable transportation and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. With a strong infrastructure in place to support EV adoption, California is poised to lead the way in the transition to a cleaner and greener future.
