A petition to revoke Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk’s Canadian citizenship is making its way through Canada’s House of Commons. The petition, filed by author Qualia Reed from Nanaimo, British Columbia, calls for the revocation of Musk’s citizenship based on his political affiliations and his association with U.S. President Donald Trump.
The petition has garnered support from various officials, including Democrat MP Charlie Angus, a vocal critic of Musk. As of Saturday evening, the petition has amassed over 34,000 signatures from across Canada, surpassing the required 500 signatures for presentation to the House of Commons.
Elon Musk, who was born in South Africa and is a U.S. citizen, also holds Canadian citizenship through his mother, Maye Musk, who was born in Saskatchewan, Canada.
The petition alleges that Musk’s actions are contrary to Canada’s national interests and accuses him of using his wealth and influence to meddle in Canadian elections. The petition text calls for the Prime Minister to revoke Musk’s dual citizenship status and Canadian passport immediately.
Opened for signatures on February 20, 2025, the petition is set to close on June 20, 2025. Currently, it has amassed a total of 242,024 signatures, with Ontario leading in signatures at 89,997, followed by British Columbia with 50,147, and Quebec with 42,014.
The petition has sparked a contentious debate among Canadians, with some supporting the call for Musk’s citizenship revocation while others defend his contributions to technology and innovation. The outcome of the petition remains uncertain, but it highlights the complexities of citizenship and the intersection of politics and business in today’s world.
