One NZ has introduced a groundbreaking new service called Satellite TXT, which enables customers with compatible phones and plans to send and receive text messages from remote areas throughout New Zealand. This innovative service is made possible by SpaceX’s Starlink’s Direct to Cell technology, which extends coverage to areas where traditional cell towers are unable to reach, such as farms, mountains, roads, and bodies of water.
The primary objective of Satellite TXT is to provide an additional layer of connectivity and safety for individuals in remote locations. It is recommended by One NZ that customers carry a personal locator beacon for emergency situations during outdoor excursions. Initially, the delivery of text messages may take up to 3 minutes in many cases, but could take up to 10 minutes or longer as the system is being rolled out. However, as more satellites are launched and the service matures, delivery times are expected to improve.
The functionality of Satellite TXT is contingent upon having a compatible phone, being situated in an area with a clear line of sight to the sky, and the presence of a satellite overhead. Currently, only a limited number of phones are compatible with the service, but more models will be added over time. Customers will receive a notification when the service becomes accessible on their device.
Satellite TXT is included in eligible One NZ mobile plans at no additional cost. Customers are advised to visit the One NZ website or utilize the My One NZ app to verify their phone’s compatibility and plan eligibility. Before venturing beyond traditional cell coverage areas, it is essential to ensure that your phone and plan are capable of sending and receiving Satellite TXTs. To establish a successful connection, locate open spaces with unobstructed views of the sky and avoid obstacles like buildings, trees, and other structures.
For Oppo and Samsung phone users, a list of models that are either satellite-ready or currently undergoing testing has been provided. The introduction of Satellite TXT is poised to revolutionize communication for individuals exploring remote regions in New Zealand, thanks to the collaboration between SpaceX and Starlink.
