The US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has launched an investigation into crashes associated with Tesla’s Actually Smart Summon feature. The probe began on Monday, January 6, 2025, after the NHTSA’s Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) received a complaint alleging that a crash occurred during an Actually Smart Summon session.
According to the complaint, there have been at least three media reports of similar crashes linked to Actually Smart Summon. In all four Tesla crashes, Actually Smart Summon failed to detect obstacles such as posts or parked vehicles, leading to the accidents.
The NHTSA’s report highlights that the ODI has received a total of 12 Smart Summon-related complaints, all describing crash scenarios similar to those experienced by users of Actually Smart Summon. These incidents occurred during sessions where operators had little time to react, either due to limited visibility or the need to release the app button to stop the vehicle’s movement.
The NHTSA is investigating multiple crash allegations involving both Smart Summon and Actually Smart Summon. In these cases, users reportedly had insufficient reaction time to avoid a collision, either because of obstructed line of sight or the delay in stopping the vehicle by releasing the app button.
