Newport, Kentucky is leading the way in embracing electric vehicles (EVs) for city operations, following the success of integrating Teslas into its police fleet. The city’s journey with EVs began in December 2023 when the police department added three Tesla Model 3s for administrative use. Impressed by the performance and cost savings, the department added two more in November, with plans to expand to other city departments.
Captain Kevin Drohan highlighted the cost-effectiveness of EVs compared to traditional police vehicles. While Dodge Durangos cost over $50,000 each, the Tesla Model 3 base models come in at around $39,000. In addition to the upfront cost savings, EVs also drastically reduce fuel expenses, with charging costing as little as $15 a month.
Assistant Chief Herschel Day emphasized the benefits of EVs in terms of safety and efficiency. The EVs are equipped with cameras that provide multiple views, making it easier to avoid accidents and gather evidence. This feature has been instrumental in improving overall performance and effectiveness for the police department.
The success of the EVs has not gone unnoticed by officers, with many now considering purchasing their own EVs. Assistant Chief Day noted that once officers experience driving an EV, they are quickly sold on the benefits it offers.
In line with their commitment to sustainability and efficiency, Newport is now looking to expand EVs to other city departments such as Planning, Development, and Code enforcement. The compact size of the city makes EVs a perfect fit, reducing fuel and maintenance costs for daily use. To support the growing EV fleet, Newport is also installing a Level 3 supercharger.
Even the fire department is exploring the addition of EVs, demonstrating Newport’s holistic approach to embracing sustainable solutions across all areas of city operations. With the successful integration of EVs in the police fleet, Newport is setting an example for other cities to follow suit.
In a related development, Unplugged Performance recently showcased their Tesla police mods, impressing officers with the power and performance of EVs. This further solidifies the trend of EV police vehicles hitting the road, with Teslas leading the way.
Newport’s proactive approach to incorporating EVs into its city operations not only showcases their commitment to sustainability but also highlights the tangible benefits in terms of cost savings, efficiency, and performance. As more cities look to transition to cleaner and more sustainable transportation options, Newport’s success story serves as a model for others to emulate.
