Kia is making waves in the electric vehicle market with its upcoming models, including the pint-sized EV2 Concept. But it seems that the automaker has even more surprises up its sleeve, as reports suggest that Kia is working on an even smaller electric model than the EV2. This new model, expected to be called the EV, will likely be the electric equivalent of the Kia Picanto city car.
The Kia Picanto is already a compact city car popular in European markets, and the electric version of this model is expected to be even smaller than the EV2. With a smaller size and lower price point, the EV is anticipated to be priced around €5,000 ($5,200) lower than the EV2, making it a more affordable option for urban drivers.
Kia President Ho Sung Song hinted at this upcoming model, stating that they are exploring the possibility of introducing a smaller, lower-priced electric vehicle to cater to a wider customer base. The EV1, as it may be called, is part of Kia’s larger strategy to offer a range of electric vehicles, from the EV9 down to the compact EV1.
The Hyundai Inster, a similar small electric vehicle from the Hyundai-Kia group, provides a reference point for the size of the upcoming EV1. Measuring just over 150 inches in length and 63 inches in width, the Inster is already compact by American standards. The EV1 is expected to be even smaller, similar in size to the Kia Picanto.
While the EV1 may not be available in the United States due to its small size, it will cater to the European market where compact city cars are popular. Competing with other small electric vehicles like the Dacia Spring, Leapmotor T03, and BYD Seagull, the EV1 is expected to carve out its own niche with its unique design and affordability.
With a price tag of around €25,000 ($26,000), the EV1 will offer a more budget-friendly option compared to the larger EV2. Kia’s focus on expanding its electric vehicle lineup to include smaller, more affordable models demonstrates the brand’s commitment to sustainable mobility and catering to a diverse range of customers. Stay tuned for more updates on Kia’s electrification plans as they continue to innovate in the EV market.
