The Volvo XC90 has been a staple in the Swedish automaker’s lineup for over a decade now. Despite its age, it continues to be one of Volvo’s best-selling models. However, with several facelifts over the years, it’s clear that an all-new generation is needed to keep up with changing market demands.
According to Volvo boss Hakan Samuelsson, a new generation of the Volvo XC90 is in the works. The third-generation model is expected to feature a long-range plug-in hybrid powertrain, similar to the XC70 crossover recently revealed for the Chinese market. Samuelsson believes that European consumers will demand plug-in hybrids with longer ranges for years to come.
The current XC90 plug-in hybrid, known as the T8 AWD Plug-in Hybrid in the US and as the T8 Recharge AWD elsewhere, boasts a high-voltage battery with a usable capacity of 14.7 kilowatt-hours. This allows for an EPA-rated all-electric range of 33 miles and a total range of 530 miles when combined with the 2.0-liter gas engine.
While the current XC90 PHEV is a solid option for daily driving, the new Volvo XC70, based on Geely’s Scalable Modular Architecture (SMA), offers even more impressive electric range figures. With battery options of 21 kWh or 39 kWh, the XC70 can achieve a maximum electric range of 62 miles or 112 miles, respectively.
A new XC90 could breathe new life into Volvo, especially as the company faces declining sales and a tarnished reputation due to software issues. While the timeline for the new XC90’s release remains uncertain, it is likely to be at least 2027 before it hits the market.
Overall, the Volvo XC90 remains a beloved model in the Volvo lineup, but the introduction of a new generation is essential to keep up with evolving consumer preferences and technological advancements in the automotive industry. Stay tuned for more updates on the upcoming Volvo XC90 and its potential impact on the market.
