New details have emerged regarding Elon Musk’s Boring Company’s plans to connect Universal Orlando Resort’s north campus to Universal Epic Universe. The recently released bidding documents provide insight into the staffing, construction timelines, tunnel configuration, and operational details of the proposed Loop system.
The Shingle Creek Transit & Utility Community Development District selected The Boring Company as the top bidder for the Universal Orlando transport project. The evaluation documents obtained by local news media reveal the company’s strategy for executing the project. The proposal includes a twin-tunnel configuration, with one tunnel for each direction. The construction process, including permitting, design, and implementation, is estimated to take approximately a year and a half once approvals are in place. The company plans to use multiple tunnel boring machines and install temporary support infrastructure during construction.
The bid documents outline a team of internal specialists, including tunnel engineers, structural engineers, and tunnel boring machine experts. Additionally, six subcontractors will handle fire protection, communications, soil treatment, and concrete work. The company asserts that it has the necessary equipment and personnel readily available to complete the project efficiently.
Operationally, the system will follow the Las Vegas Loop model, utilizing Tesla vehicles for on-demand, express transportation. Vehicles will be dispatched as needed, with adjustable capacity in real time. Stations may be built underground or above ground, with ramp access into the tunnels. The proposal also mentions the potential integration of a configurable Robovan for passengers and cargo in the future.
While the Loop system is designed to integrate easily into environmentally sensitive areas, detailed mitigation plans for Central Florida’s high water table and limestone geology have not been provided. The company plans to engage an Orlando-based geotechnical firm to assess soil conditions.
The newly released details shed light on The Boring Company’s innovative approach to providing efficient and reliable transportation solutions for Universal Orlando Resort. The project holds promise for enhancing connectivity and accessibility within the entertainment complex.
