- Mercedes-Benz’s AMG division is gearing up for a three-row electric SUV
- This electric vehicle will be built on a new AMG.EA dedicated EV platform
- Expect prototypes to hit the road for testing this winter
Mercedes-Benz’s performance arm, AMG, is venturing into the realm of all-electric full-size SUVs with a unique offering that will stand out from the rest of the Mercedes lineup.
While AMG has previously introduced a sportier version of the Mercedes-Benz EQE SUV, a larger standalone model is now in the works, based on the distinct AMG.EA dedicated EV platform. A teaser sketch shared during the announcement showcases a sleek design with a bold silhouette, featuring a sharply angled rear roof pillar and a low roofline.
AMG has a history of launching standalone models like the current GT coupe, the SL roadster, and the SLS AMG sports car. However, this upcoming SUV will mark the first time AMG designs a full-size SUV from scratch, in response to the growing popularity of SUVs, as noted by AMG boss Michael Schiebe.

While technical specifications are pending, the SUV could potentially utilize axial-flux motors from Yasa, a British company acquired by Mercedes in 2021. Mercedes also holds a stake in U.S.-based solid-state battery developer Factorial, which recently announced advancements in battery technology that could enhance range by up to 80%. Such innovations will be crucial for achieving efficiency gains in a large and powerful SUV like this.
AMG’s electric SUV will face competition from a similarly sized three-row electric SUV from Porsche set to debut in 2027. This SUV will also follow in the footsteps of performance sub-brands introducing bespoke SUVs, such as the BMW XM plug-in hybrid launched in 2022 by BMW M.
Prototype for first EV fully developed by Mercedes-Benz AMG
The first round of prototypes for the AMG electric SUV is slated to hit public roads for testing this winter. While Mercedes has not disclosed a specific launch date, this SUV will be the second model based on the AMG.EA platform, following a fastback sedan expected next year that could potentially replace the current AMG GT 4-Door Coupe.
Reports earlier this year hinted at AMG’s exploration of an electric supercar inspired by the Vision One-Eleven concept unveiled in 2023. Additionally, AMG will continue enhancing performance variants of models from the main Mercedes lineup, including the upcoming CLA-Class compact sedan.
