Maserati has decided to cancel the production of an all-electric version of its MC20 supercar due to lack of customer interest, as reported by Evo on Mar. 6. This move indicates a potential shift in Maserati’s commitment to phasing out gasoline cars by the end of the decade.
The official statement from the automaker mentioned, “The project was stopped due to the current forecast for insufficient demand in the super sports car market for a battery electric vehicle.”

Maserati had previously announced plans to offer fully electric versions of all its models by 2025 and transition to an all-electric lineup by 2030. However, the timeline was accelerated to 2028 last year, with the elimination of V-8 engines being the first step in phasing out gasoline engines.
Despite the setback with the MC20 electric version, Maserati had successfully launched electric variants of its Grecale compact crossover, GranTurismo coupe, and GranCabrio convertible. The brand had also intended to introduce electric versions of the Quattroporte sedan and Levante SUV under the Folgore badge.

While Maserati faces challenges with electric vehicle adoption, other luxury brands like Bentley and Porsche are also experiencing slower-than-expected demand for high-end EVs. Bentley plans to launch its first EV in 2027 and transition to an all-electric lineup by 2035, while Porsche continues to navigate the evolving landscape of electric mobility.
