Tesla has officially announced the launch of a highly anticipated feature for the Cybertruck — the Powershare Grid Support program. This program allows owners in Texas, and soon California, to send power back to the electric grid and earn money in the process.
The introduction of the Powershare Grid Support program fulfills years of speculation and owner requests for vehicle-to-grid (V2G) functionality. With Powershare, Cybertruck owners can now support the electric grid during high-demand energy events and receive credits on their energy bills. This not only benefits the individual owner but also helps enhance the energy resilience of the community.
Initially rolling out in Texas, eligibility for the program is tied to specific utilities and Tesla’s energy plans. Owners must reside in an area serviced by CenterPoint Energy or Oncor, have a Powershare-capable vehicle, and install the necessary equipment at home. Enrolling in the Tesla Electric Drive plan and opting in through the Tesla app are also required. Once enrolled, owners can automatically contribute energy during peak demand events, which may occur unexpectedly but are infrequent.
California support for the Powershare Grid Support program is set to launch soon, with PG&E, Southern California Edison, and SDG&E being the participating utilities. Enrollment will be managed through utility-run vehicle-to-grid programs within the Tesla app. Similar to Texas, California owners will need compatible hardware and must actively opt in to participate.
Tesla has indicated that the Powershare Grid Support program is currently available through an early adopter program, with plans for broader access in the future. Notably, participating in the program will not impact Cybertruck warranties during the initial rollout phase.
This update comes as Tesla continues to expand bidirectional charging capabilities across its vehicle lineup. While the Cybertruck Powershare with Powerwall integration was delayed until around mid-2026, vehicle-to-load (V2L) support was recently enabled on the China-only three-row Model Y L.
For Cybertruck owners, V2G functionality represents a significant enhancement, transforming the truck into a mobile energy asset. With the increasing frequency of extreme weather events straining energy grids, Tesla is positioning the Cybertruck not just as an electric pickup but as a valuable distributed energy resource.
