Mack Trucks will soon introduce a new Class 8 electric truck called the Pioneer, which will offer an impressive range of over 300 miles on a full charge. This electric rig is designed for Regional Haul, Drayage, and Hub-and-spoke operations, making it ideal for trips of up to 300 miles and low-speed operations around ports and transport hubs. The Pioneer will be available in two cab types: a Day Cab and a 44-inch Short Sleeper.
The upcoming Mack Pioneer EV will directly compete with the Tesla Semi, offering similar range capabilities for shorter hauls. While the Tesla Semi boasts fast charging capabilities with up to 750 kilowatts of power from a Megacharger, Mack Trucks has not yet disclosed the charging speed for the Pioneer. However, Mack’s other electric trucks can charge at up to 150 kW.
The Pioneer will be powered by American-made batteries from Proterra, a company known for its expertise in electric buses and vehicle components. Proterra’s battery business was acquired by Volvo Group last year for $210 million. The Proterra H2-23 battery that will power the Mack Pioneer EV has been extensively tested to ensure durability and fast charging speeds. The battery will send electricity to Mack’s in-house e-axle.
Mack Trucks claims that the combustion-powered Pioneer truck is its most fuel-efficient model, with an 11% improvement in fuel efficiency compared to previous models. The digital mirror system, which replaces traditional side mirrors with cameras, also contributes to fuel savings for fleets. The Pioneer will be Mack Trucks’ third electric model, joining the LR and medium-duty MD models in the company’s electric lineup.
In conclusion, the Mack Pioneer EV is set to make a significant impact in the electric truck market with its impressive range, efficient powertrain, and innovative features. Stay tuned for more updates on this exciting new addition to Mack Trucks’ electric vehicle portfolio.
