Kroger, one of the largest supermarket chains in the U.S., is making a significant push towards supporting electric vehicles (EVs) by partnering with EVgo to install thousands of DC fast chargers at its stores over the next decade. This move is aimed at enhancing the EV charging infrastructure and making it more convenient for EV owners to charge their vehicles while shopping at Kroger locations.
The first new charging site, located in Salt Lake City, Utah, is already up and running, with plans for additional locations in Arizona, California, Florida, Georgia, Texas, and Washington. Kroger stores in other states will also be equipped with brand-new EV chargers capable of rapidly charging a vehicle’s battery in as little as 15 minutes.
EVgo, a leading charging network operator, will be responsible for building at least 150 fast charging stalls per year through 2035 at various Kroger-owned stores, including Foods Co., Fred Meyer, Fry’s Food Stores, Harris Teeter, King Soopers, and Smith’s Food and Drug. Each station will feature up to 16 high-power stalls, although specific power outputs have not been disclosed.
The Salt Lake City location, a Smith’s store, currently features 12 350-kilowatt chargers that can charge up to 24 cars simultaneously. All the charging connectors at this site are CCS1, but EVgo also offers chargers with NACS connectors for different types of EVs.
Badar Khan, CEO of EVgo, expressed excitement about the expanded partnership with Kroger, stating that adding fast charging options at Kroger locations will provide EV drivers with the convenience of charging while shopping. This collaboration aims to empower drivers with the freedom to choose electric vehicles and make charging more accessible to the growing number of EV owners.
Currently operating approximately 4,800 DC fast charging stalls in the U.S., EVgo has ambitious plans for expansion. By the end of 2029, the company expects to have over 15,000 stalls operational nationwide. To accelerate installations, EVgo has teamed up with companies like GM Energy and Pilot Company to install charging stalls at thousands of locations. GM Energy has already deployed over 2,000 co-branded stalls, with more installations in the pipeline.
