- Capable of supplying up to 100 kwh for long-range EV9 for home backup
- Currently available in select states, nationwide release pending
- Offers vehicle-to-grid functionality, subject to local utility support
Kia has opened pre-orders for the Wallbox Quasar 2 home charger, which will enable bidirectional charging for the EV9 electric SUV.
Kia revealed that the Quasar 2 charger will be the first to enable bidirectional charging with the EV9, providing home backup and vehicle-to-grid capabilities. To utilize this feature, owners will need the 12-kw Quasar 2 charger and a power recovery unit with a grid disconnect switch, available as a bundle for $6,440 from Wallbox.
The charger and power recovery unit will have limited availability, with priority given to pre-ordering EV9 owners. Initial pre-orders are restricted to residents of California, Florida, Illinois, New Jersey, New York, Texas, and Washington, with plans for a nationwide rollout later. Green Car Reports has contacted Wallbox and Kia for further information on availability.

The Quasar 2, equipped with a CCS interface, allows owners to utilize the bidirectional charging feature of the EV9’s E-GMP platform.
It also features a Power Recovery Mode for home backup power, enabling owners to access 76 kwh to 100 kwh of energy from the EV9’s battery pack. This amount is sufficient to power an average American home for up to four days, surpassing the capacity of a 13.5-kwh Tesla Powerwall.
Furthermore, the Quasar 2 can be integrated with a home’s electric panel, enabling the EV9 to supplement home electricity, charge during off-peak hours, and provide power back to the grid. However, the latter function is subject to approval by local utilities.

The total package price is comparable to Ford’s home backup power system for the F-150 Lightning, priced at around $6,000. General Motors also offers home energy kits starting at $12,700, including external battery packs, chargers, and necessary hardware for home backup power.
Aside from home backup power, Fermata’s FE-20 system for the Nissan Leaf is another option for EV owners to supply energy back to the grid.
