- Kia EV buyers after Sept. 4 to receive free NACS adapters in 2025
- Pricing for NACS adapters for other Kia EV owners not disclosed
- Kia EVs to charge at Tesla Superchargers by end of first quarter
Kia has announced changes to its plan for providing Tesla North American Charging Standard (NACS) adapters and access to the Tesla Supercharger network.
Customers who purchase a 2024 or 2025 Kia EV9 or a 2024 Kia EV6 starting from Sept. 4, 2024, will receive a complimentary NACS adapter. Other Kia EV owners, including those who purchased EV6 and EV9 models before this date, as well as Kia Niro EV owners, will have to pay an undisclosed amount for their adapters.

While many car manufacturers have committed to adopting the NACS charge port, only a few have taken steps to offer adapters and Supercharger access. General Motors requires all customers to pay for adapters, whereas Ford initially offered one free adapter per vehicle to existing EV customers.
Kia plans to start shipping adapters in early 2025 and aims to provide Supercharger access by the end of the first quarter. Initially set for January 15, access to the Supercharger network for Kia EV owners was delayed. Kia did not explicitly mention Tesla or Superchargers, stating that customers will be able to charge at “more than 16,500 NACS DC fast chargers in the U.S.” based on data from the Energy Department’s Alternative Fuel Data Center.

Most automakers, except for Stellantis, have mentioned Tesla in their announcements regarding NACS adoption. Kia is part of the Ionna North American fast-charging network, which supports both NACS and CCS standards. This move by Kia could be to highlight the availability of NACS connectors outside the Supercharger network in anticipation of Ionna’s expansion.
Kia, along with Hyundai and Genesis, has announced NACS compatibility. While Hyundai has already started producing Ioniq 5 EVs with Tesla NACS charge ports, Kia has not provided a timeline for incorporating NACS ports into its vehicles.
