The latest addition to the Jeep lineup is the all-new Avenger 4xe, and orders for this city crossover with an eAWD system have officially begun. This marks a significant upgrade for the American automaker’s smallest vehicle, which has been available as a front-wheel-drive model in Europe for the past two years. Now, with the introduction of the Avenger 4xe, customers can finally enjoy the benefits of all-wheel drive capability in this compact crossover.
The Avenger 4xe is powered by a 1.2-liter turbo engine producing 136 horsepower, which is mated to a six-speed dual-clutch transmission sending power to the front wheels. In addition to the gasoline engine, the Avenger 4xe features two small electric motors – one at the front and one at the rear – providing electric all-wheel drive functionality. Each electric motor contributes 28 horsepower, resulting in a total system output of 145 hp. This powertrain enables the Avenger 4xe to accelerate from zero to 62 miles per hour in 9.5 seconds and reach a top speed of 120 miles per hour.
While the eAWD system enhances the Avenger’s performance and handling, it is primarily designed for low-speed driving. The rear electric motor can deliver power to the rear wheels when needed, with a maximum of 28 hp available at any given moment. At speeds above 56 mph, the rear motor disengages automatically, ensuring optimal efficiency and performance. Between 18 and 56 mph, the rear motor engages only when necessary, while below 18 mph, it provides a constant 50:50 torque split for enhanced traction.
Unlike a traditional plug-in hybrid, the Avenger 4xe is equipped with a mild hybrid system featuring 48-volt technology. This setup allows the Avenger 4xe to operate in electric-only mode at speeds of up to 18 mph for short distances, enhancing fuel efficiency and reducing emissions. Additionally, the Avenger 4xe boasts increased ground clearance, water fording capability up to 15.7 inches, and a range of off-road-ready features such as anti-scratch bumpers, roof rails, Goodyear all-season tires, underbody protection, and a rear tow hook.
Inside, the Avenger 4xe offers a practical and rugged interior with a black headliner and waterproof seat covers, making it suitable for outdoor adventures and everyday driving alike. Overall, the Avenger 4xe represents a versatile and capable addition to the Jeep lineup, combining the brand’s renowned off-road heritage with modern electrified technology. Although it may not be available in the United States, European customers can look forward to experiencing the all-weather performance and efficiency of the Jeep Avenger 4xe when deliveries begin in May.
