Tesla has officially unveiled the updated Model Y, codenamed Juniper, in China. This mid-cycle refresh brings a host of new features and improvements to the popular electric compact crossover. While deliveries are set to begin in China and Southeast Asian markets in March, North American customers can expect availability starting in the spring.
The revamped Model Y comes with a starting price of 263,500 renminbi (approximately $35,900) in China, representing a 5.4% increase over the previous model. This update marks the first significant redesign for the Model Y since its debut in 2019.
One of the most noticeable changes is the new styling, featuring a chiseled front end with a light strip that mirrors the design of the Cybercab robotaxi. Inside, the cabin boasts a quieter environment, ambient lighting, and revised controls reminiscent of the Model 3 update from late 2023. Additionally, the seats now offer heating and ventilation options for all-weather comfort, along with a touchscreen designed for second-row passengers.
Tesla has also upgraded the Model Y’s suspension, resulting in a more comfortable and controlled ride similar to the improvements seen in the Model 3. For the Chinese market, both range and horsepower have been increased. The base single-motor rear-wheel-drive model now delivers 295 hp and can accelerate from 0-62 mph in 5.3 seconds. The battery has a 62.5-kwh capacity with an estimated range of 368 miles on the Chinese test cycle.
In addition to the base model, a dual-motor all-wheel-drive version is available with a front motor delivering 184 hp and a rear motor with 260 hp. This configuration allows the Model Y to sprint to 62 mph in 4.3 seconds, with a range of 446 miles on the Chinese test cycle.
In the U.S., the Model Y is currently offered in single-motor rear-wheel-drive Long Range, dual-motor all-wheel-drive Long Range, and dual-motor all-wheel-drive Performance variants. While specific power outputs are not disclosed by Tesla, acceleration times range from 6.5 to 3.5 seconds.
Overall, the updated Tesla Model Y brings a fresh look, improved performance, and enhanced features to the electric crossover market. With deliveries set to begin soon, customers can look forward to experiencing the latest advancements in Tesla’s lineup.
