- Recall Alert: 145,235 Hyundai and Genesis EVs
- Charger Issue Leads to Drive Power Loss
Hyundai and Genesis are recalling a total of 145,235 electric vehicles due to a potential problem with the onboard chargers that could result in vehicles entering a fail-safe driving mode with reduced power.
The recall affects models such as the 2022-2024 Hyundai Ioniq 5, 2023-2025 Hyundai Ioniq 6, and 2023-2025 Genesis GV60, all based on the E-GMP platform. Other affected vehicles include the Genesis Electrified GV70 SUVs and Genesis Electrified G80 sedans.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) states that the integrated charging control units in these vehicles could be damaged by specific electrical loads, preventing them from charging the 12-volt batteries. This triggers the fail-safe mode, reducing power gradually over time.

Drivers will receive dashboard warnings and audible chimes if the fault occurs, with essential vehicle functions remaining operational. The fix involves updating the charging control unit’s software and inspecting and replacing the unit and fuse as necessary, all at no cost to owners through Hyundai and Genesis dealers.
Hyundai is set to send owner notification letters on January 17, 2025. Owners can also contact Hyundai customer service at 1-855-371-9460 or Genesis customer service at 1-844-340-9741, referencing the recall numbers provided by NHTSA.

Automakers are slow to transition away from 12-volt systems in new vehicles, with Hyundai’s E-GMP vehicles still using this technology despite advancements like 800-volt charging. While some hybrids have ditched the 12-volt battery, Hyundai’s EVs have yet to follow suit.
