The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has reported that the 2024 Acura ZDX and 2024 Honda Prologue electric SUVs did not receive safety awards.
Although both electric vehicles performed well in various tests, they fell short in the small overlap front test, resulting in only an “Acceptable” rating. To earn an IIHS Top Safety Pick or Top Safety Pick+ award, a vehicle must receive a “Good” rating. The SUVs failed to achieve a “Good” rating due to the passenger crash test dummy’s head slipping between the front and side curtain airbags.

Other requirements for the safety awards include a “Good” rating in the updated side crash test, as well as “Acceptable” or “Good” ratings in the pedestrian front crash prevention test and headlight evaluation. Additionally, a “Good” or “Acceptable” rating in the updated moderate-overlap front crash test is necessary for the highest Top Safety Pick+ award.
Both the ZDX and Prologue received “Good” ratings in other crash tests and “Acceptable” ratings in the pedestrian front crash prevention test. The Prologue’s headlights were deemed “Acceptable,” while the ZDX’s headlights were rated “Good” after recent adjustments by Acura. Vehicles manufactured before September 2024 have headlights rated as “Poor.”

Although not part of the award criteria, the IIHS also assesses rear-seat reminders and LATCH child-seat anchor ease of use. Both Acura and Honda received “Good” ratings in these categories.
Both the ZDX and Prologue are manufactured by General Motors, incorporating their battery and propulsion technology. While the IIHS has not released test results for the related Cadillac Lyriq and Chevrolet Blazer EV, several other electric vehicles have received top safety ratings from the organization. For 2024, eight all-electric models were awarded the Top Safety Pick+ designation, with nine others receiving the lower Top Safety Pick award.
