Google has unveiled a new AI-powered feature for Google Maps called “Ask Maps,” which aims to provide highly detailed and personalized responses to complex, real-world questions. This new feature is made possible by Google’s AI technology, Gemini, which helps Maps understand and respond to hyper-specific queries that were previously challenging to address.
With Ask Maps, users can now ask detailed questions like “where can I charge my phone without having to wait in line for coffee” or “where is the closest public bathroom that isn’t completely disgusting.” Gemini processes these queries and provides personalized responses based on the user’s preferences and past interactions with Google Maps.
During a briefing with reporters, Google product manager Andrew Duchi shared an example of how Ask Maps can assist users in finding a suitable location for a gathering. By describing their plans in a conversational manner, users can ask for recommendations that meet their specific criteria, such as a vegetarian restaurant with a cozy atmosphere and seating for four people at a particular time. Gemini analyzes user-submitted reviews and photos to recommend suitable locations, taking into account personal preferences and past interactions with Maps.
One of the key features of Ask Maps is its ability to turn plans into action. If users find a recommended location appealing, they can book a table with just a single tap, making the process seamless and efficient. The responses generated by Gemini are based solely on data from Google Maps and do not incorporate information from other Google apps, ensuring privacy and data security for users.
In addition to the Ask Maps feature, Google is also introducing a new navigation experience called “Immersive Navigation” to enhance the visual representation of routes in Google Maps. This upgrade includes refreshed colors, detailed 3D buildings, elevated roadways, realistic terrain, and greenery, providing users with a more immersive and informative navigation experience. The interface will highlight key road features such as lanes, crosswalks, traffic lights, and stop signs to help drivers navigate with confidence.
Immersive Navigation will begin rolling out in the US next week and will be available on iOS and Android devices, as well as on systems like Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and vehicles with Google built-in. These updates are part of Google’s ongoing efforts to enhance the user experience and provide valuable and personalized information through its products.
