Genesis is taking a new approach to electrifying its lineup, expanding beyond full EVs to include non-plug-in hybrids and range extenders. This shift in strategy comes as the luxury brand aims to meet consumer demand for electrified vehicles while also prioritizing driving fun and performance.
The next-generation EVs from Genesis will be built on a new rear-biased platform, designed to enhance the driving experience, especially in the high-performance Magma versions. The GV60 Magma is set to be the first in a new line of high-performance vehicles from the manufacturer.
Genesis’ decision to incorporate hybrids into its electrification plans follows feedback from consumers who have shown a preference for hybrid technology over pure EVs. The company is currently testing prototypes for its upcoming hybrid lineup, which will also include extended-range electric vehicles (EREVs).
Lead engineer Manfred Harrer emphasized that performance will be a key focus in the development of Genesis’ next-gen electrified vehicles. Harrer highlighted the exciting challenge of marrying Genesis’ premium luxury approach with a performance-oriented mindset.
The brand’s EREVs will offer a combination of EV driving characteristics and a longer range, addressing concerns around range anxiety and towing capacity. These vehicles will feature a combustion-powered generator to enhance range and charging capabilities.
All vehicles built on the new platform will have a rear-wheel-drive bias, promising an engaging driving experience. Hyundai, Genesis’ parent company, recently unveiled details of its new hybrid system, which is expected to be integrated into Genesis models as well. This innovative system includes both an integrated starter-generator and a hybrid traction motor in the gearbox for improved performance and efficiency.
Two combustion engines will power the hybrid system, with a 2.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine generating 329 hp and 339 lb-ft of torque. A smaller 1.6-liter turbo four will be used for midsize models, producing up to 280 lb-ft of torque.
The Palisade hybrid, Hyundai’s first vehicle with vehicle-to-load (V2L) bidirectional charging, allows users to power external appliances from its battery. This feature will be incorporated into all future Hyundai and Genesis hybrids, highlighting the brand’s commitment to innovation and sustainability.
The upcoming Genesis GV60 Magma, with over 600 hp, is set to be a standout performance vehicle in the brand’s lineup. This hot version will be the first to carry the Magma designation, signaling the arrival of top-tier performance offerings from Genesis.
As Genesis and Hyundai continue to push the boundaries of electrification and performance, consumers can expect a range of exciting powertrain options that cater to different preferences. Whether you choose a hybrid, EREV, or full EV model, Genesis promises a rewarding and exhilarating driving experience for all.
