General Motors is making waves in the automotive industry by offering free internet connectivity for audio streaming services in new cars sold in the United States and Canada. This new perk is now part of the automaker’s OnStar Basics connectivity bundle, which comes at no extra cost for all 2025 and newer GM models. This feature, called Standard Streaming, allows owners to access their favorite music, audiobooks, podcasts, and news apps without any additional fees for eight years after the initial vehicle purchase.
One of the standout features of this offering is the introduction of a native Apple Music app that runs on GM’s Android Automotive-based infotainment systems. For Cadillac owners, this app brings an extra bonus in the form of Spatial Audio with Dolby Atmos, enhancing the overall audio experience in the vehicle.
Previously, 2025 and newer GM car owners had to pay a $9.99 monthly subscription for a service called OnStar Connect, which included features like automatic crash response, remote vehicle commands, navigation, and voice assistance. With the inclusion of audio streaming in the free OnStar Basics pack, GM is providing added value to its customers without any additional charges. However, other features like automatic crash response and remote vehicle commands still require a paid subscription.
It’s important to note that 2024 and older GM cars equipped with the Android Automotive-based infotainment system do not qualify for the free audio streaming feature. Owners of these models will need to continue paying for an OnStar Connect subscription, which costs $14.99 per month. Additionally, the native Apple Music app will not be available for 2024 models or older, as confirmed by a GM representative.
The rollout of the native Apple Music app is currently underway as an over-the-air software update for select 2025 and newer Cadillac and Chevrolet models, with plans to expand to other GM brands in the future.
