Ford has issued a recall for 950 F-150 Lightning electric pickup trucks due to potential issues with defective battery cells. Owners are advised to limit charging until the vehicles can be inspected and necessary replacements made.
The recall addresses concerns with misaligned electrodes in the battery cells, which could lead to internal short circuits over time. This could pose a fire risk, as noted by the NHTSA, with Ford reporting five incidents of vehicle fires possibly related to this issue.
Owners are urged to restrict charging to 80% capacity until they can bring their trucks to dealerships for inspection and any required replacements at no cost. Letters will be sent to owners on March 17, and they can contact Ford’s customer service for further details, referencing recall number 25S18.
Defective battery cells have been a common cause for EV recalls, with other automakers like Mercedes-Benz and Jaguar also facing similar issues. Chevrolet also had to replace battery packs in a previous recall of Bolt EV and Bolt EUV models.
