SpaceX has recently surprised select customers with a rare discount on Starlink service, offering a 20% reduction on monthly bills for the next six billing cycles. This unexpected promotion seems to be targeted, with no action required from users to redeem the offer.
Customers in the U.S., Australia, and Indonesia have reported receiving emails from Starlink informing them of the discount. The message from the Starlink team states, “As a valued Starlink customer, you’re getting 20% off your monthly plan for the next six billing cycles. No action needed. Just keep enjoying your service and the discount will apply automatically.”
One user based in Utah shared that the discount lowered their Residential Lite plan cost from $80 to just $64 per month, resulting in savings of around $96 over six months. Speculation suggests that this discount may be a tactic to prevent customer churn, particularly for users who have not been actively using the service.
Over the years, Starlink pricing has seen gradual increases, with U.S. customers now paying up to $120 per month for the standard Residential plan. To provide more affordable options, SpaceX introduced an $80 per month Residential Lite plan in areas with excess capacity. Additionally, new subscribers have been offered free standard Starlink hardware with a 12-month commitment.
However, not all regions are benefiting equally. Free hardware is only available in select areas with excess capacity, while regions with limited bandwidth, such as the Pacific Northwest, now face a hefty $1,000 “demand surcharge” on top of regular hardware pricing, pushing upfront costs to over $1,300.
With over 2 million active subscribers in the U.S., Starlink continues to expand its network. SpaceX has unveiled plans to deploy third-generation Starlink satellites by the first half of 2026, promising significant network improvements.
The criteria for eligibility for the 20% monthly discount remain unclear. Speculations suggest that it may be based on usage, tenure, or local network demand, but there has been no official confirmation from SpaceX. Notably, the discount is not limited to North America, as users in Australia and Indonesia have also reported receiving it.
