Tesla is set to introduce Ultra-Wideband support for Android devices, bringing exciting new features such as hands-free trunk opening and an improved phone key. This long-awaited update comes after Tesla initially launched UWB support for iOS users in February 2024.
A recent decompile of the Tesla app version 4.41.0 revealed a new flag labeled “MOBILE_APP_FEATURE_ANDROID_UWB_ENABLED,” indicating the upcoming Android UWB support. Most flagship Android phones already support UWB, including Google Pixel 6, Samsung Fold 2, and Samsung S21+.
Supported Tesla models for UWB include 2024 Model 3 and later, 2021 Model S and X, Cybertruck, and the upcoming 2025 Model Y (Juniper). Legacy models like the first-gen Model 3 and current Model Y do not support UWB.
The addition of UWB will enhance the reliability and precision of the phone key, allowing for more accurate tracking of the device’s location in relation to the vehicle. This will enable hands-free trunk opening and automatic frunk/trunk features for supported Tesla models.
In addition, a new NFC prompt feature is expected to be introduced in the app, providing a backup option for accessing the vehicle in case the phone key fails. This will allow users to utilize their device’s NFC capabilities even if their phone battery is depleted.
While the exact release date for this feature on Android devices is uncertain, the presence of references in the app indicates that Tesla is actively working on its development. The update could be rolled out via a server-side change in the near future, or it may undergo further testing before being made available to users. Stay tuned for more updates on this exciting development for Tesla owners.
