New Tesla Model Y Equipped with Advanced 4D Radar Technology for Enhanced Safety
The highly anticipated Tesla Model Y is set to hit the roads next month, boasting a range of innovative features designed to prioritize safety. In a recent video interview conducted by Tesla Owners Silicon Valley, the engineering team revealed that the new Model Y will come equipped with a cutting-edge 4D cabin radar system.
4D Radar System
While Tesla has incorporated cabin radar technology since 2022, the latest iteration promises to offer even greater capabilities. Positioned above the rearview mirror, this advanced radar system will provide detailed information surpassing the current radar and cabin camera functionalities.
Enhanced Safety Features
One of the standout features of the new radar system is its ability to classify passenger size, allowing for dynamic deployment of airbags based on individual occupant characteristics. By accurately determining the size, height, and weight of passengers, the vehicle can optimize airbag activation to minimize injuries and reduce unnecessary costs.
Child Safety Measures
In addition to passenger size classification, the radar system is designed to detect the presence of children in the vehicle. If a child is left unattended, the system will trigger an alert through the Tesla app, activate the HVAC system, and in case of emergency, automatically contact emergency services with the vehicle’s location.
It is worth noting that in North America, Tesla vehicles can only call 911 over Bluetooth connectivity. However, Tesla is exploring alternative methods to enable eCall capabilities for enhanced emergency response.
Future Activation
Although the refreshed Model Y is set to launch in March, the new radar system and its associated features will be activated in Q3 2025. This timeline indicates that the enhanced safety functionalities will be operational by late summer or early fall. Stay tuned for more updates on this groundbreaking technology.
