Apple’s Secret Satellite Internet Project Revealed
In a surprising turn of events, it has been revealed that Apple had quietly explored the idea of building its own satellite internet service as far back as 2015. Working in collaboration with Boeing, the tech giant had ambitious plans to deliver full wireless internet access—not just emergency connectivity—to iPhones and homes.
The internal project, known as Project Eagle, involved the concept of launching thousands of Boeing satellites into orbit to beam internet directly to Apple devices. For home users, Apple even considered the possibility of window-mounted antennas to spread the signal indoors.
However, despite the initial excitement and potential of Project Eagle, Apple CEO Tim Cook ultimately decided to shelve the project. The main concern was that venturing into the satellite internet space could potentially strain Apple’s long-standing partnerships with telecom carriers.
Fast forward to 2022, when Elon Musk, founder of SpaceX, proposed a lucrative deal to Apple. SpaceX offered an exclusive 18-month agreement to provide Starlink satellite service to iPhones in exchange for a substantial $5 billion up-front payment, with an additional $1 billion per year after the exclusivity period ended. Musk even issued a ultimatum to Apple, threatening to launch a similar feature independently if the deal was not accepted within 72 hours.
In a surprising twist, Apple declined the offer. Shortly after, SpaceX announced a partnership with T-Mobile to bring satellite-powered texting to smartphones, just weeks before Apple unveiled the iPhone 14. This move solidified T-Mobile and Starlink’s position in the satellite internet market, while Apple continued to offer its satellite service solely as an emergency solution.
The failed negotiations between Apple and SpaceX highlight the fierce competition and high stakes in the satellite internet industry. With T-Mobile and Starlink’s Direct-to-Cell service gaining momentum, it remains to be seen how Apple will navigate the rapidly evolving landscape of connectivity solutions. Elon Musk’s well-timed offer to Tim Cook certainly added an intriguing chapter to the ongoing saga of satellite internet development.
