Elon Musk’s artificial intelligence startup, xAI, has recently posted a job opening that has caught the attention of many anime fans and tech enthusiasts alike. The company is looking for a Fullstack Engineer to work on its “Waifus” project, which is part of xAI’s Companions feature that has been making waves online.
The Companions feature was initially launched for SuperGrok users but has since been made available to all Grok iOS app users. The feature currently includes two companions: Ani, an anime goth girl reminiscent of Misa Amane from Death Note, and Rudi, a talking red panda. A third companion, a male anime character, is also in the works. Ani, in particular, has gained popularity for her playful and flirtatious interactions, inspiring fan art and memes on social media.
It seems that xAI has big plans for its Companions feature, as indicated by the job listing for a Fullstack Engineer. The hired engineer will be responsible for creating fast, scalable avatar experiences for Grok, involving real-time media processing, performance optimization, and feature development across multiple platforms. Proficiency in Python is a must, with bonus points for experience in Rust, WebSocket, and WebRTC protocols.
Fullstack Engineers working on xAI’s Waifu project can expect a competitive salary ranging from $180,000 to $440,000, along with equity, comprehensive medical, vision, and dental coverage, access to a 401(k) retirement plan, disability and life insurance, as well as various discounts and perks.
