Elon Musk made a groundbreaking announcement at the defunct Seaholm Power Plant in Austin, Texas, unveiling TERAFAB, a $20-25 billion joint venture between Tesla, SpaceX, and xAI. Described as “the most epic chip building exercise in history by far,” TERAFAB integrates the capabilities of all three companies into a vertically integrated AI hardware machine.
TERAFAB aims to revolutionize semiconductor production by consolidating every stage of the process under one roof, from chip design to testing. The facility is projected to scale to approximately 70% of the global output of the current largest semiconductor foundry, Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC).
Elon Musk envisions achieving one terawatt of computing power annually, with Tesla’s AI5 inference chips for vehicles and Optimus robots, as well as D3 chips for SpaceXAI’s orbital satellite constellation.
The decision to merge these companies was driven by a supply chain crisis that Musk had been warning about for over a year. With external chip capacity reaching its limits, Musk emphasized the necessity of building in-house capabilities to meet future demands.
One of the most innovative aspects of TERAFAB is its focus on space applications. Musk revealed that 80% of the facility’s output will be dedicated to space-based orbital AI satellites. By harnessing solar energy in space and leveraging the vacuum environment for heat rejection, SpaceXAI aims to create the world’s largest data center in low Earth orbit.
This announcement ties together various initiatives that Musk has spearheaded in recent years, including the xAI-SpaceX merger, Tesla’s solar equipment talks in China, domestic solar manufacturing efforts, humanoid robot development, and Starship’s progress. TERAFAB represents the culmination of these efforts, creating a unified ecosystem that spans Earth, space, and beyond.
“I want us to live long enough to see the mass driver on the moon, because that’s going to be incredibly epic,” Musk remarked during the presentation.
The unveiling of TERAFAB marks a significant step towards Musk’s vision of establishing a galactic civilization, with chips made on Earth, launched by SpaceX, powered by Tesla solar, and operated by xAI. The integration of these technologies represents a bold leap towards a future where humanity extends its reach beyond the confines of Earth.
