After U.S. President Donald Trump’s recent purchase of a Tesla at the White House, CEO Elon Musk has made a bold commitment to increase the electric vehicle maker’s production capacity in the United States.
Since Trump took office, his administration has been focused on promoting domestic manufacturing, and Musk’s pledge aligns with these efforts.
Elon Musk’s Ambitious Plan
Musk took to social media to announce his pledge, stating, “In support of the policies of President Donald Trump and to demonstrate our confidence in the future of the United States, Tesla commits to doubling vehicle production in the U.S. within 2 years!”
While the specifics of how Tesla plans to achieve this goal are still unclear, it is likely that Musk will look to expand production at the Gigafactory Texas complex, as Tesla’s Fremont Factory is already operating at full capacity.
Challenges and Opportunities
Currently, Tesla’s U.S. production capacity stands at around 1 million vehicles per year. The Fremont Factory can produce over 650,000 vehicles annually, while Giga Texas has a capacity of 375,000 vehicles per year.
To reach the target of 2 million vehicles per year, Tesla will need to significantly increase output at Giga Texas. Musk has previously mentioned the Cybercab as a key player in achieving this goal.
Elon Musk’s Vision
During a recent earnings call, Musk predicted that Tesla would achieve volume production of the Cybercab by 2026. He stated that the company aims to produce at least 2 million Cybercabs per year. By following through with this plan, Tesla can fulfill Musk’s commitment to doubling vehicle production in the U.S.
“I do feel confident of Cybercab reaching volume production in ’26, not just starting production, reaching volume production in ’26. And that should be substantial, but we’re aiming for at least 2 million units a year of Cybercab,” Musk explained.
